Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2022 runs from Monday 5 to Sunday 11 of September.
Gambling Harm Awareness Week (GHAW) is a national campaign to increase public awareness of gambling harm. During the week, gambling harm services, health and welfare organisations, and communities come together to host events across Aotearoa (in person and online) to promote strategies to help people to move away from gambling harm.
The Salvation Army Oasis’s theme for GHAW 2022 – The Hidden Addiction – Gambling.
The Salvation Army Oasis commissioned a billboard poster highlighting the hidden nature of gambling addiction and the impacts of harmful gambling. We want to highlight that gambling harm is a recognised health issue in New Zealand and the addictive nature of gambling means that it is challenging to control gambling on your own.
The Salvation Army Oasis and other specialist gambling harm services are available across Aotearoa to support anyone affected by gambling harm, including family and whanau in their own right.
Check out all our GHAW site activities here.
The Salvation Army Oasis are also recognising the week with an online quiz to raise awareness about gambling harm in NZ.
If participants complete the quiz, they are eligible to receive $50 vouchers from either Countdown, MTA petrol, Mitre10 or Whitcoulls.

It is important to take care of ourselves and our communities, especially as we all cope with the rising costs of living and the (after) effects of Covid-19. Our giveaway approach is to support families and whanau at this time. It might be a good opportunity to grab a picnic with friends or whānau; or have a family activity day including gardening, crafts or playing board games!
